BY DAY SHE PLAYS SELFLESS FIREFIGHTER STELLA KIDD ON NBC’S CHICAGO FIRE. ON HER OWN TIME, MIRANDA RAE MAYO IS COMMITTED TO HELPING OTHERS.
We sat down with the actress to fi nd out how she gives back, how she stays grounded, and what the city of Chicago means to her.
It’s the season of giving. What does giving mean to you? First of all, I think it means staying grounded. I try to take a deep breath and set an intention for every day. Meditation has taught me a lot about being present to what I’m feeling and what I want to experience from my day. I’m always asking, “How can I experience more gratitude? More forgiveness? How can I experience more joy?” I feel like we would have a very di erent world if people just woke up in the morning and said, “I really want to fi nd grace everywhere today.”
How do you give back to the city of Chicago?
I love this city so much. When it comes to time and other resources, I’m very passionate about my involvement in a few di erent organizations. The Bodhi Spiritual Center is a place where people can become more conscious of themselves and get plugged into opportunities to serve the city and beyond.Through Bodhi, I connected with Sacred Keepers, which works with kids to teach them how to be true inheritors of the earth through philanthropy, environmental studies, and science and community building. I’m passionate about helping children, and Sacred Keepers helps kids navigate their inner worlds, especially when they don’t have a lot of control over the outside world.
It sounds like you’re busy. Tell us about your typical day.
I like to sleep when I can. On a work day, I’ll snooze through a few alarms, brush my teeth, and rush to set. On my days off , I’ll wake without an alarm, work out with my trainer, make some coffee, read and meditate. Some nights I like to go out for cocktails, and some nights I’ll stay in, order Thai food, and watch a movie.
