Tell us what makes your business different from other wedding companies?
We are small! We only take 1-3 weddings per weekend at max so that we can really dedicate the time and attention needed to each cake and each client. Another thing that may be different about us is that the same person who meets with you for your tasting & consult, is the same person who designs your cake, answers your emails, and actually makes and delivers your cake. There is nothing lost in translation and we get to form a closer relationship with each client during the process.
Who inspires you?
I find it’s the other vendors involved in each wedding who typically inspire me and my cake designs. I love looking at what the client has planned for their décor, florals, paper goods, clothing, etc to see where we can pull inspiration from. Whether it is a motif from their invites that we can incorporate into the cake, a lace pattern from the dress replicated in royal icing, or recreating their fresh flowers in sugar, I love pulling pieces from other aspects of the day so that the cake flows seamlessly into the big picture. We are lucky to be in Chicago with so many talented wedding pros, the inspiration and collaboration is truly endless.
What is your favorite trend for weddings currently?
COLOR!! I am loving all the fun color pallets we are seeing this year and next. While a green and white wedding is classic and always beautiful, give me the entire rainbow and wild colorful flowers to create and I am happy.
What is one of the most unique elements you have seen in a wedding?
A few years ago we designed a 9 tier cake that was lowered out of a hidden pocket in the ceiling of a custom built tent. That is something I’ve never seen before and will probably never see again, but it was a showstopping moment for sure! The guests were just floored when the floral ceiling opened up and out came an enormous cake.
Do you do anything that is signature to your brand?
I think our signature would definitely have to be our hand made sugar flowers. This isn’t something every cake designer offers, as they are a very time consuming and specialized craft. I love using the florist’s design for inspiration to recreate the fresh flowers in sugar to arrange on the cake. One of the best parts about sugar flowers (besides the fact that they are edible and non-toxic/poisonous like a lot of fresh flowers) is that they make a wonderful keepsake from the wedding day. We offer cloches and shadowboxes with sugar flower arrangements from their cake for clients post-wedding so they can enjoy them for years to come.
What is the most gratifying part of your business?
Obviously we just love hearing ‘The cake was so beautiful! We loved the design!’ but the most gratifying is when the reviews come in that the cake was beautiful AND delicious. We take both the insides and the outsides of the cake very seriously, because if it doesn’t taste good, it doesn’t matter how pretty it is.
How far in advance should couples book your business?
The rule of thumb used to be 3-6 months for cakes, but now that we are taking less orders than we used to, combined with the pandemic, I would say 6-9 months (or more – we are currently booking into 2023) is a better timeframe to ensure a spot on the calendar. Don’t wait, and this goes for any vendor, if you see someone that really fits your style and what you are looking for, reaching out sooner than later is in your best interest.
