THE COUPLE Sam Neilson proposed to his college sweetheart, Johnna Metcalf, near DuSable Harbor, reliving their first encounter. “When we first met, we walked on the Riverwalk and sat on a bench to just watch the boats go by and enjoy the sun,” Johnna remembers; his 2023 proposal brought it full circle.
THE DETAILS They tied the knot at the Chicago History Museum in front of 170 loved ones. “We couldn’t have chosen a venue with a more stunning backdrop and architectural appeal,” the bride says. As a nod to the September date, they opted for a “last sunset of summer” color scheme of bright pink, orange and yellow. And the couple’s mini dachshund, Winnie, appeared in details like the groom’s cufflinks and atop drink stirrers and cocktail picks.
THE PARTY As a senior wedding planner at Big City Bride, Johnna wanted to incorporate modern twists on classic elements in the design and food. Braised beef short rib and blackened barramundi were served for dinner, and mini Chicago hot dogs were a late-night snack. Everyone belted Taylor Swift to round out the night, and Swiftie-inspired friendship bracelets were given as favors.
