Fashion entrepreneur, social commerce trailblazer and Bravo star Christos Garkinos is turning the page on a new chapter. The newly minted author has just debuted his first book, Covet The Comeback, and to celebrate, he’s heading to the Windy City for an open-to-the-public luxury designer pop-up at Janet Mandell (janetmandell.com) on April 1, featuring vintage statement pieces from high-end labels like Chanel, Prada and Hermès.
Garkinos catapulted into the spotlight over two decades ago for his work in the designer resale market and his starring role in Bravo Networks’ The Dukes of Melrose. His memoir chronicles the ups and downs of celebrity life while shedding light on how the son of Greek immigrants found success, hit rock bottom and built a fashion empire from scratch.
We chatted with Garkinos about the inspiration behind his authorial debut, his evolution in the fashion industry and his upcoming visit to Chicago.
What inspired you to write your book, Covet The Comeback?
My life has been full of twists and turns, including my fair share of highs and lows. I wanted to share my story and spread a message about resilience in the face of adversity—always with a dash of humility and humor.
What do you hope readers will take away from it?
It’s never too late to pivot. No matter your age, life situation, finances, etc., you can always start afresh and reinvent yourself.
What did you learn about yourself while writing your book?
While I likely knew this subconsciously, writing the book really brought to the forefront how being a child of Greek immigrants truly shaped me and informed every stage of my life. I owe so much to my mom and dad, and I hope this book will make them proud as they watch over me.
You’re headed to Chicago to host a vintage designer pop-up. What do you appreciate about Chicago style?
I am originally from Detroit, so Chicago was the first big city I ever got to visit, including all its famous department stores. The women in Chicago are both chic AND approachable, which is rare! I appreciate their keen eye for style that helps them live their real, everyday lives.
Given the fashion industry’s fast-paced nature, how do you continue to evolve?
I always try to stay one step ahead of the ever-evolving retail landscape. While it can be hard to navigate and predict, building a loyal community is the only way to build a business in this day and age, and my community is everything to me.
What celebrity would you love to dress and why?
I’ve had the incredible fortune and pleasure of dressing many of the best celebrities of our time, but my dream would be to dress the late, great diva Maria Callas. What incredible talent and glamour! She was the real deal.
What’s next for you?
A TED Talk? Dream big, I always say! I will focus on continuing to grow my business, my network and my community. Also, I wouldn’t mind a pied-a-terre in Paris!
