City of Light

| April 4, 2013 | Parties

THE PARTY Lyric Opera’s signature Fantasy of the Opera gala was a wow-worthy event yet again as the Civic Opera House was completely transformed into 1920s Paris, complete with the Eiffel Tower and Moulin Rouge nightclub—behind its signature red windmill were stairs leading down to a red-lit club, where guests enjoyed cocktails, macaroons and personalized drawings by caricature artist Linda Annen. THE SCENE A crowd of 700 walked the streets of Paris—signature Avenue des Champs-Élysées and Place Saint-Germain des Prés signs lined the foyer—where stations served hors d’oeuvres from restaurants Avec, Vera, Toni Patisserie & Café, Sweet Margy, Embeya and more. Between sips of Veuve Clicquot Champagne and “Oo la la!” highballs (Grand Marnier, cranberry juice, seltzer and lime), guests got silly in the photo booth with berets and sunglasses. THE HIGHLIGHTS A cabaret-style performance featured stars of the opera house’s current season, such as soprano Amanda Majeski, who sang and tap-danced “I’ve Got Rhythm” and baritone Lucas Meachem, who performed a goosebump-inducing rendition of “Oh, Danny Boy.” Photos by Dan Rest and Aaron Ryskiewicz
