East Meets West

Guests of the English-Speaking Union felt magically transported to Singapore’s landmark Raffles Hotel for the organization’s breathtaking Ascot Ball. More than 100 attendees filled a private club decked in the grand decor of colonial Britain. Singapore Slings were a fitting start to the night, and later, a bagpiper in traditional British costume led partygoers to dinner, where they indulged in Asian cuisine (think pine nut-crusted rack of lamb with Chinese broccoli) around centerpieces crowned with palm fronds and orchids. But the crowning achievement was the $25,000 raised to support ESU’s efforts to foster global understanding and goodwill. A royally splendid evening! –Photos by Dan Rest
