Joe McGuire Design teams with architect Vladimir Radutny to create a personality-filled dream home in an iconic Streeterville co-op.
With a custom table fabricated by Peter Chasak, Artifort Beso chairs by Interni and the Pallatre three-light suspension chandelier by Vesoi from Lightology, the modern, minimalist dining room allows the sweeping Lake Michigan views to shine.
THE CLIENT
Location doesn’t get more primo than the S-curve of DuSable Lake Shore Drive, and Benjamin Marshall’s 1912 brick-and-limestone beauty is one of the renowned street’s standout gems. Longtime residents of the building, the client had worked with Colorado-based Joe McGuire Design on their Aspen home; a couple years later, when thinking about purchasing their Chicago neighbor’s apartment and combining it with their own, they signed the firm once more to make their new Windy City home a reality in collaboration with Chicago architect Vladimir Radutny.

THE PRIORITY
“They wanted a clean, open space with a layout that took advantage of the incredible wraparound views of Lake Michigan,” explains studio founder and principal designer Joe McGuire, “from Navy Pier all the way around to Oak Street Beach with views of [875 North Michigan Avenue and other downtown skyscrapers] on the other side of the apartment. They wanted it to be clean and modern, but infused with curves and color and light-hearted creativity.”
The living room pops with Roche Bobois’ Bubble pivoting armchair upholstered in Marina 2014 Techno 2D, a custom concrete-topped coffee table by Greyscape Studio, and a custom ottoman by Rooster Socks Furniture upholstered in indigo unbleached linen by Raoul Textiles, plus art pieces from the clients’ collection.
THE CHALLENGE
Simply put, says principal designer Matthew Tenzin, “The biggest challenge was a fun one: bridging the architect’s minimalist vision with the client’s love of color and pattern.”
Stone Italiana countertops in Cartapietra Greige and cabinetry by Peter Chasak set a soothing, stylish tone in the kitchen.
THE DETAIL
“We think the architect’s visionary transformation of two very traditional separate apartments into one dreamy, loftlike, warm and happy space was an inspiration,” enthuses McGuire. “We’re proud of the way we brought in color and shapes and patterns to provide a sense of fun, which reflected our client’s artistic personality and style. The incorporation of some of the original historical elements such as the dining area ceiling added a nice nod to the past.”
A working nook in the family room beckons with a custom desk by Peter Chasak and chairs by OfficeScapes (now Slate).
Highlights of the primary bathroom include a custom vanity by Peter Chasak, lighted mirror by MunnWorks, Pastille disc sconces in matte white by RBW and Boreal Dots floor tile in lunar by WOW.
The bright, airy sunroom beckons with a three-seat Danish curved sofa plus a custom ottoman in tangerine Momentum 3 Etch by Zoffany fabric, both by Rooster Socks Furniture.
The primary bedroom sitting area features an inviting Love Sofa by Moooi and an ottoman upholstered in Designers Guild mixed tones canvas fabric by John Derian.
THE OUTCOME
Sums up Tenzin, “They were absolutely delighted with the end result. It was a complicated remodel project in a wonderful, landmark building. Every step of the way required careful planning and collaboration. The clients were grateful and so happy.”
