Professional athletes are more than just stars. To the fans that love them, they’re heroes, and a new partnership between Sotheby’s auction house and the Liverpool Football Club takes that metaphor to the metaverse.
Introducing the LFC Heros Club, a new collection of NFTs that bring fans closer to the action on the pitch with collectible digital assets and access to a greater community both online and off. The collectible NFTs are inspired by 24 of the mens team’s players, though parts of their appearance are randomly generated by an algorithm to create unique looks, and some are more rare than other.
Traits vary from the common “Match Mode” to the less common “Fresh Mode” and the most rare “Super Mode.” Topping them all is the special legendary set that depicts each player as a true-to-life superhero.
The partnership marks Sotheby’s first time working with a sports organization and furthers the auction house’s commitment to the NFT space. Fans who buy an LFC Hero NFT also gain access to a community forum, LFC experiences, virtual gatherings, competitions, receive discounts on LFC retail purchases and more.
“We wanted to create a really accessible collection of NFTs that are truly unique to LFC, and simply provide fans an opportunity to explore this new and trending topic,” Drew Crisp, Senior Vice President of Digital at Liverpool FC, states is a press release. “Most importantly, we want to give fans the choice to buy one should they wish while continuing to support the great work of the LFC Foundation.”

"To partner with Liverpool Football Club, one of the most successful and storied football clubs in the world, for this first-of-its-kind NFT collection marks a turning point in how NFTs can be used to engage fan communities with tailored releases and unique concepts specially designed for their supporters,” says Sebastian Fahey, Sotheby’s Managing Director for EMEA and Executive Lead for Sotheby’s Metaverse. “Together we have created a new digital art collection, which celebrates the legacy of LFC heroes, and leverages our web3 technology to enable the club’s passionate and global fan base to be a part of this exciting initiative for the long-term.”
The LFC Heroes Club limited edition sale and Legendary 1/1 auction take place on the Sotheby’s Metaverse NFT marketplace, kicking off March 30 and closing on April 1. LFC will donate 50 percent of all Legendary proceeds, 10 percent of Hero proceeds, and 10 percent of all future resale royalties to the LFC Foundation.
