In 2022, men’s fashion is more colorful than ever. Gone are the days of strict suits and ties, and in come the vibrant scarves, eye-catching accessories and, yes, even skirts.
As gender norms fly out the window left and right, one trend is particularly sticky with the in-crowd—men’s luxury bags.
Earlier this month, Hermes announced the official launch of the Mirkin bag, a mens-specific Birkin bag complete with its own keychain detail, but if you're looking to buy men's bags, you don't have to buy new.
A recent study by eBay reports that 76 percent of male customers are investing in pre-owned luxury, while 56 percent of men are pulling the trigger and buying those pre-owned luxury resale goods at least once a month.
Chief among those searches and sales sits the luxury bag market. In fact, eBay saw 880 percent year-over-year growth in men’s search activity in regard to luxury bags alone.
So, who are these stylish men wearing and carrying? French icon Louis Vuitton leads the pack with 93 percent search volume growth from January to January, 2021 to 2022. Valentino backpacks for him saw 58 percent search volume growth in the same period, while Prada and Saint Laurent bags grew in search volume by 39 percent and 14 percent respectively.
What does this trend look like in the streets? It looks like recent Super Bowl champ Johnny Mundt of the Los Angeles Rams showing off his Louis Vuitton travel duffel on Instagram; or to keep with the sports theme, Shaun White announcing his own line of luxury sports cases and luggage bags, which was also a collaboration with LV.
Hip-hop and fashion icon A$AP Rocky was an early bag adopter, spotted in the streets with his Goyard messenger bag flung proudly not across his body but over the shoulder as far back as 2015. His buddy Tyler, The Creator takes the love a step further by designing and selling his own bags; while pop star Harry Styles featured in a bag campaign by Coach.
Suffice to say, whether you sling it across your chest or over your shoulder, carry it on your back or in your hand, men’s bags aren’t going anywhere but to the top of your must-have spring and summer accessories list.
