A Chicago transplant returns to her roots, turning to old friend and San Diego interior designer Pamela Day to help reinvigorate her new Hinsdale home.
A plush Caracole sofa and rug, combined with an oval coffee table from Global Views, center the living room.
A well-deserved promotion at work prompted interior designer Pamela Day’s longtime friend to pack up her coastal abode in Ocean, N.J, and settle into a luxe Tudor-style single-family home in Hinsdale. Back in her “old stomping grounds,” she hired Day, owner of Pamela Day Designs (pameladaydesigns.com) in San Diego, to help transform her new home. “Pam is a very dear friend who I have known for almost 20 years. She also has impeccable taste and I knew she would know exactly what I wanted,” she remarks. “There was no other choice.”
The striking dining room is Day’s favorite in the house.
“Our goal was to incorporate a more suitable style in terms of furnishings and finishes with the home and locale,” Day explains. The client adds, “My old home was located near the beach and had a much more coastal vibe. This home is completely different.” The design team set about revamping the six-bedroom, 6 ½-bathroom space, tailoring the furniture and accessories in each room to complement her client’s extensive art collection, which includes original artworks by Michael Cheval and Romero Britto. “Other than that, we had a blank slate and a very open-minded client that is not afraid of color and appreciates bold choices,” the designer notes.
The luxe yet cozy primary bedroom boasts a custom Century bed, Century chairs and a Caracole side table and dresser.
Despite working long distance from California, both designer and client agree that the project ran very smoothly. As for the pandemic? “We timed [it] pretty well as far as shipping delays. There was only one tabletop that sat out in the middle of the ocean for months on end,” Day laughs.
A neutral color palette allows subtle details to really shine through.
Day upgraded the first-floor powder room into an exotic showstopper with a complete overhaul of the sink, vanity and light fixtures that highlights the bold, showy wallpaper and bright-orange Oriental mirror. “We toned it down (some) with a navy safari wallcovering and accented it with a bright, hammered, polished-nickel vanity and hardware,” she explains. Her other favorite room? “The dining room came together quite beautifully,” Day notes. Featuring a custom Century dining table and both Jessica Charles and Taylor King chairs, “it is just unique and feels enchanting and grand.”
A Canadel dining table and Century chairs with Schumacher cushions create plenty of kitchen space to entertain.
“It would be incredibly difficult to pick just one,” the client admits when asked about her favorite room. “The playroom for my daughter, the stunning office, the fabulous dining room, the living room with its beautifully decorated bookshelves, my bedroom with the custom-made bed and the most luxurious, comfortable bed linens… I could go on and on.” Day adamantly agrees, adding, “All of the areas we worked in fit with both the artwork and the overarching style of the home.”
