Phillip Harrison Interiors dramatically transforms a subdued townhome into a dynamic yet family-friendly domestic oasis.
Cole & Son Hicks’ Hexagon Charcoal & Metallic Gilver on Stone wallpaper pops against artwork sourced from Wendover Art Group in the eating area.
THE PROJECT
Phillip Harrison Interiors founder and principal designer Mark Schubert isn’t afraid to go bold, which is exactly what drew one recent client to the studio. “The client enjoyed how we used color and material in our previous projects while [maintaining] a sophisticated aesthetic and creating casual comfortability and liveable space,” explains Schubert, who signed on with the project and set the design process in motion.
Plated brass Joni pendants by Visual Comfort add a chic touch above the kitchen island.
Color Wheel Classic White tile from Daltile makes a style statement and adds definition between the kitchen and the eating area.
THE PRIORITY
“When we walked into our client’s home,” explains Schubert, “it was a blank canvas of neutral tones and they wanted to enliven the space with bold colors, curated artwork, and an overall elevated aesthetic while keeping the design family-friendly and casual.”
Cabinets painted in Sherwin-Williams Gray Matters add to the room’s aura of sophisticated.
The living room beckons with Interior Define’s Ainsley sectional sofa and a Mesa coffee table by West Elm.
THE CHALLENGE
Like so many recent design projects, the pandemic was a primary obstacle, notes Schubert, who adds, “We had a tight timeline as well, as our clients were expecting their second child. With less than nine months to complete the entire project, we shifted our design to readily available and quick-ship products to ensure we could [deliver on time].”
Window coverings fabricated by Curtain Couture in Robert Allen Davao Platinum fabric add sophistication to the living and dining rooms.
Other dining room highlights include Rejuvenation’s Willamette chandelier, RH’s round Maslow Spider dining table and Leftbank Art’s “Bloquer III” giclee sourced at Oasis Accents.
THE DETAIL
The gleaming kitchen turned out to be one of Schubert’s favorite aspects of the completed project. “We completely refaced the fireplace in the eating area with a custom marble surround and added custom walnut and white painted built-ins flanking the fireplace. It really is the centerpiece of that space. We also added subway tile to the entire kitchen, including the ceiling over the island, to create a bit of definition between the kitchen and the eating area. The inspiration behind this was taken from an open-concept restaurant kitchen where tile encapsulates the space to define the kitchen from the dining room.”
A nook in the eating area charms with CB2’s Suspend white marble and wood bar cabinet, a Wells tufted leather swivel chair by Pottery Barn and Four Hands’ Nolan Nyla end table.
THE OUTCOME
Says Schubert, “On the final day of installation and staging, we walked the client through their home and they could not believe they would be living in the space. They were mesmerized by the fine attention to detail and cohesive elements all pulling together to create a truly unique space for themselves. The primary bedroom is their favorite space as it is dark and dramatic, which is opposite the main living space of their home and was designed as a haven they could retreat to each night.”
The primary bedroom is a feast for the eyes thanks to Cole & Son’s Luxor metallic bronze on slate grey wallpaper, Nodes large pivot sconces by Visual Comfort, a pair of Jules chairs in Sapphire Marine by Four Hands, West Elm’s Cosmo side table, and the artworks “Hidden Worlds I” and “Hidden Worlds II” by Wendover Art Group.
