At a recent CS event, the Vizzy Music Series at VU Rooftop, Apollo Mighty blew the crowd away with his soulful and entertaining performance. Apollo recently released his EP 'Behavior' which features a diverse assortment of soulful contemporary R&B tracks. The lead single "Arrival" from his EP is the music debut for NBC Chicago Fire's Miranda Rae Mayo. Apollo’s music is an extension of his past experiences. He is a proud advocate of the LGBTQIA community and the Black Lives Matter movement. His lyrics are centered around his personal evolution amongst the continually evolving world. Apollo wants to use his platform to bring awareness to important foundations, such as the Black Mental Wellness Corporation.
The music video of "ARRIVAL" has just dropped today, and we invite you to take a look! Daniel Kyri stars in and directed the video, and Miranda Rae Mayo stars in and features in the video and on the song along with Apollo Mighty.
How did you get your start in music?
I signed to a gospel record label when I was 15. That was the first time I recorded anything. I've been singing since I was about 7 years old though.
What inspired your EP 'Behavior'?
I needed an outlet to talk about some of the emotions I was experiencing before and during quarantine. I channeled my thoughts through the lyrics. It helped to sort out a lot of what was going on internally, and I was candid about it.
Tell us what the past months of quarantining have been like for you? How has it affected your creative process?
It’s been a lot of things. I have times of elation and moments of deep heartbreak. I've learned a lot about myself and taken many steps in the direction of healing. I've also demystified a lot of what I thought about relationships which has been eye opening to say the least.
What do you find most inspiring about the Chicago music scene?
Honestly the community and the innovation. I see artists making incredible art with the resources within their grasp and its incredible. I'm inspired by the people here. They’re rough but they are warm and real too.
What is on your bucket list when we can start traveling and resuming life as "normal" again?
I really want to see my family. I know that's not a bucket list kind of thing, but I miss them. It's been a while since I was able to visit so I'd like to go and stay for a few weeks if possible.
What is next on the horizon for you creatively/ musically?
I'm producing visuals at the moment. Learning how to create content on my own. I'm starting a podcast and I have new music coming soon as well.
Can you share some personal goals you have for the remainder of this year, and into 2021?
My personal goal is to remain grounded in who I am, as well as stay curious about who I'm becoming. I plan to keep exploring and unearthing what brings me pleasure.
Is there anything else you'd like our readers to know about you?
