“Female empowerment” was the hot catchphrase at the Standard Club during the Women’s Board of the Adler Planetarium’s Women in Space Science Luncheon honoring Gwynne Shotwell, an alum of Northwestern University and the president and COO of SpaceX. After a light lunch and Shotwell’s inspiring address, the scene moved to Adler itself, where 250 middle school girls joined partiers for an afternoon of hands-on activities and workshops with Adler’s scientists. By the end of the day, nearly $175,000 was raised for the Women’s Board’s scholarship fund for budding scientists and engineers. –Photos by Dan Rest
