Like Riding a Bike

| February 27, 2012 | Parties

THE PARTY In celebration of its 25th anniversary, SRAM, a bicycle-component company with world headquarters in Chicago, commissioned 46 artists to weld and contort 25 to 100 bike parts and create one-of-a-kind sculptures. The first prize was awarded to Lewis Tardy and his inline skater, “Powerglide,” which was auctioned off alongside other entries to benefit World Bicycle Relief, a nonprofit that provides bicycles to developing parts of Africa. THE BOTTOM LINE The event and its 185 attendees raised $96,754 for World Bicycle Relief and will provide 722 bicycles to students in sub-Saharan Africa. Photography by Borterwagner Photography
