Sealife Soiree

| August 4, 2014 | Parties

The Party
The Shedd Aquarium bubbled with excitement as some 800 philanthropists convened for The Goldfish Ball, an annual gala in support of Shedd’s mission to connect people to aquatic life. The lavish event raised more than $1.67 million.

The Scene
Guests sipped cocktails and sampled sustainable sushi while the delightful playing of harpist Penny Currier filled the reception. Some were daring enough to partake in up-close encounters with a stingray and beluga whale, while others enjoyed an awe-inspiring skyline view on the north terrace, where the Paul Marinaro Duo serenaded mingling partygoers.

The Highlights
Longtime Shedd supporter Bill Kurtis emceed the program, which featured three dazzling vocal arrangements by Broadway’s Susan Egan, best known for her role as Belle in the musical adaptation of Beauty and the Beast. Most memorable, however, was when Ty the sea lion and the aquarium’s dapperly dressed rescue dogs joined Egan onstage for a showstopping ballad from the animated film. Dinner commenced amid striking scenes of marine life, as guests dined on roasted heirloom carrot salad and grilled jumbo gulf shrimp in the Caribbean Reef rotunda, which was exquisitely decorated by HMR Designs. –Photos courtesy of Shedd Aquarium/Brenna Hernandez, Heidi Zeiger and Eva Ho
