You’ve likely seen his unforgettable image “Afghan Girl” on the cover of National Geographic. Now, after touring Australia, Mexico, Portugal and Spain, renowned American photographer Steve McCurry brings his fittingly named exhibition, ICONS, to Chicago in its U.S. debut.
Set to run at the Loyola University Museum of Art (LUMA) from Oct. 20-Feb. 1, the exhibition showcases more than 80 large-format photographs, immersing visitors in McCurry’s journeys through Afghanistan, India, Africa, Cuba and more, capturing the human element of places often considered as forbidding as they are beautiful. It’s one of the most comprehensive retrospectives of McCurry’s esteemed career, and included are the photographer’s most iconic images, including the legendary portrait of the Afghan Girl, Sharbat Gula, which graced the cover of National Geographic in 1984.
The exhibition is presented by Sold Out production company in partnership with Sudest57, a Milan-based agency known for working with internationally renowned photographers, and Fever, a leading global live-entertainment discovery platform. Together, they bring McCurry’s striking images to life, providing a unique opportunity to witness the power of his photography firsthand.
Says Kyle Mathers, LUMA’s manager and curator, “We’re excited to be hosting Icons. LUMA is dedicated to providing a venue for artistic expression that illuminates the spirit and experiences of humanity, which Steve McCurry has beautifully captured in his photographs.”
