THE PARTY The School of the Art Institute of Chicago hosted its 78th annual fashion show and scholarship benefit gala, The Walk 2012, in Millennium Park, featuring more than 300 garments designed by SAIC’s Fashion Design BFA candidates. THE SCENE Alumna Cynthia Rowley gave advice to SAIC graduates: “I don’t think the creative process ever gets easier, and I’ve come to realize that if there isn’t some amount of torture involved in every endeavor, it probably isn’t as successful as it could be. There’s no halfway here.” Rowley and her husband, Bill Powers, received the 2012 SAIC Legend of Fashion Award before helping SAIC Fashion Chair Nick Cave to present exceptional design students with internships at Ferragamo, Alice and Olivia, Derek Lam and Cynthia Rowley. More than 300 original designs were showcased by Factor models on the runway, and the 2012 Eunice W. Johnson Fellowship Award for $25,000 was awarded to Alex Ulichny. THE PLAYERS Following the show, the crowd, which also included event chairs Kate Neisser and John Jones, Mickey Boardman, Jerry Saltz, Linda Johnson Rice, and Livia Marotta of Swarovski, moved to the rooftop terrace of the Harris Theater for specialty cocktails and dinner.
