In the Spotlight

| July 10, 2014 | Parties National

The Party
More than 550 of the city’s dance-lovers and power players descended on the Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park for Hubbard Street Dance Chicago’s Season 36 Spotlight Ball, which honored the legendary Mikhail Baryshnikov and offered an exclusive sneak peek of the company’s highly anticipated collaboration with The Second City.

The Scene
Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who famously took dance lessons in his youth, was on hand to present Baryshnikov with the Spotlight Award. “I can call my mother and say, ‘Mom, your dream’s heard. I’m going to share the stage with Mikhail,’” Emanuel quipped. Baryshnikov responded in kind, and reflected on his reaction to first meeting Emanuel years ago in the Clinton White House. “Oh my God, a dancer advising the president,” he laughed. “I think you are in good hands, Chicago.”

The Highlights
The Fairmont’s ballroom roared with laughter during an exclusive preview of Hubbard Street’s upcoming series with The Second City, which is modeled after the wildly successful collaboration with Lyric Opera and premieres in October. By the time the hilarity subsided, the dance company had raised more than $775,000. –Photos by Jennifer Girard
