THE PARTY Chicago Urban League marked its 95th year with the 50th annual Golden Fellowship Dinner—co-chaired by Mellody Hobson, James O’Connor Jr., Anne Pramaggiore and Frederick Waddell—at the Hilton Chicago. Current League President and CEO Andrea Zopp welcomed guests and spoke to the evening’s theme: Honoring Our Past, Empowering Our Future. THE PLAYERS The event was hosted by comedian and New York Times best-selling author Steve Harvey, and attendees were wowed by a performance from the incomparable Grammy Award winner Patti LaBelle. Civic leader James Compton, who served as president and CEO of the League for nearly 30 years, was honored with the Edwin C. “Bill” Berry Civil Rights Award, which recognizes community leaders who leave a positive mark on the nation through tireless work and perseverance. THE BOTTOM LINE A sellout crowd of 1,700 turned out to show support for the League’s efforts to further economic, educational and social progress for African Americans and advocate for stable, strong communities.
